Hello Edgemont students, families and caregivers! My name is Clio O’Toole and I am your school counselor at Edgemont Montessori Elementary School. It is my absolute pleasure to be part of such a wonderful school and community. The Edgemont Comprehensive School Counseling Program is designed in accordance with the American School Counselor Association student standards for social-emotional development, academic support and age appropriate career exploration.
RULER is Edgemont’s Social-Emotional Learning Curriculum. For elementary school-aged children, the basic aims of the program include:
1. Recognizing Emotions: Teaching children to identify and label their own emotions and the emotions of others and the cause and effect of emotions.
2. Understanding Emotions: Helping students grasp the complexity of emotions and how they influence behavior and interactions.
3. Labeling Emotions: Guiding children in accurately naming and describing their feelings.
4. Expressing Emotions: Encouraging children to express their feelings in appropriate and constructive ways.
5. Regulating Emotions: Providing strategies and tools for managing and coping with emotions, both positive and negative. This includes techniques for calming down, problem-solving, and adapting to changing emotional situations.
Throughout the year I will visit classrooms twice a month to discuss topics that foster emotional intelligence and resilience in students, promoting a positive and supportive learning environment. Our school counseling program supports the Montessori principle of attending to the needs of the whole child while incorporating our school wide behavior expectations The 3 B’s: Be Safe Students, Be Respectful Peacemakers, Be Responsible Learners.
My role in support of students includes:
• School Based Short Term Individual and Group Counseling
• Social-Emotional Learning Lessons
• I&RS and 504 Coordinator
• Anti-Bullying Specialist
• School Safety Team Member
As school counselor I support and advocate for the needs of all students. Please do not hesitate to reach out with any questions or concerns.
