My name is Esen Gunaydin and I am the counselor at Edgemont. I am so excited to be in such a wonderful school district and a fantastic school. The emphasis of the Edgemont counseling program is to maximize the potential of all students and provide social, emotional, and academic support along the way. Below you will find examples of what you may find me doing to accomplish this goal.

Classroom Guidance Lessons-This year I will be visiting classrooms each month to talk about a variety of topics such as, friendship skills, feelings, career development, resiliency, mindfulness, and anti-bullying strategies. These lessons will be geared toward Social-Emotional Learning.

The Five Social Emotional Learning (SEL) Core Competencies

1. Self-awareness: The ability to consider and understand your own emotions, thoughts, values, and experiences, and how these can influence your actions. Self-awareness is essential as it not only fosters optimism and responsible decision making, but it also provides a foundation to establish and maintain healthy relationships with others.

2. Self-management: An individual's ability to regulate and control their emotions, thoughts and behaviors. For example, this can mean improving areas like stress management, organizational skills, your ability to set goals, impulse control, and self-discipline

3. Social Awareness: Recognize and identify the thoughts, feelings and behaviors of others. Demonstrate an awareness of the difference among individuals, groups and others cultural backgrounds. Mutual respect when viewpoints differ. Awareness of expectations in social settings.

4. Responsible Decision Making: The ability to make constructive choices about personal behavior and social interaction based on social norms, safety concerns and ethics.

5. Relationship skills: The ability to establish and maintain healthy and rewarding relationships with diverse individuals and groups. This is also your ability to take emotions into account in different situations and social interactions, in order to establish and maintain healthy, mutually rewarding relationships.
