Math Meets at Edgemont!

For the past several years, Edgemont students, under the supervision of teacher Regina O'Connor, have been voluntarily giving up recess time to participate in the Continental Mathematics League. Every six weeks, students from grades 2, 3, 4, and 5 gather for a Math Meet during recess and answer six advanced math word problems. After each meet, the students receive their results (a score of 1-6) and receive explanations to the problems allowing them to grow from the experience. Student scores are posted to the Continental Mathematics League's website where schools are ranked against other schools across the nation. Edgemont's students compete in the Pythagorean Division, the highest level for this age group. Each May, there is a Math Night during which families return to school to play math games. Also on Math Night, the top two Continental Mathematics League students from each grade receive a medal and the top ten students receive certificates. Math Meets are open to all students in grades 2, 3, 4 and 5.

According to the Continental Mathematics League's website, all CML experiences are designed to both maximize student opportunities to participate and to improve problem-solving capabilities. For more information about the Continental Mathematics League, please visit their website.
